Black Label Cup: Two people die in Soweto derby stampede

Two people died and there were a multiple injuries in a stampede at FNB Stadium during the Carling Black Label Champion Cup match between arch-rivals Kaizer Chiefs and Orlando Pirates.

A sold-out crowd was expected in the venue.

Member of Mayoral Committee (MMC) for Public Safety in Johanneburg, Councillor Michael Sun, confirmed the news on Twitter during the match, revealing that all the gates were opened to ensure crowd control.

Johannesburg mayor Herman Mashaba extended his condolences to the families of the two people who died.

He said the police were investigating the cause of the stampede.

The city’s Emergency Management Services, the Johannesburg Metro Police Department and the Disaster Management Unit were at the stadium, Mashaba said.

Kaizer Chiefs and Orlando Pirates are playing in a pre-season friendly, in what was a sold out event.
It is believed the stampede took place outside the stadium, with the fixture not being affected.
